New Jersey makes money from online gambling the same way that the state makes money from casinos in Atlantic City: by taxing operators on the revenue they generate from online casino play. The effective tax in New Jersey for online casino and poker revenue is 17.5%.
With the hope that regulating online poker and online casino games might provide a competitive advantage for New Jersey’s casinos — while also providing a financial boost to the state — then-Gov. Chris Christie and other NJ lawmakers worked together to pass a bill that legalized NJ online gambling sites offered by licensed AC casinos in 2013.

Let me ask you a question – Would you like to play 3-card poker online? Then you’re going to want to read this page. We’re going to show you which casinos you should join.
But what if you don’t know how to play? Don’t worry about that either. The truth is, this game is dead simple to learn. By the time you get a dozen rounds under your belt you’ll know exactly what you’re doing.
Improve your poker game! Play no-limit Texas Hold 'em poker in a 3D first-person perspective against one of three sophisticated AI opponents. Play no-limit Texas Hold 'em poker in a 3D first-person perspective against one of three sophisticated AI opponents. The game features real-time poker odds calculations which helps you improve your poker game.
And that will happen fast. 3-card poker is a fast game. When I last played online I probably got through 50-ish hands in the span of a couple minutes.
So not only is it an easy game to learn, once you learn it you’ll never get bored of it. Especially online where you can play against a computer, which means you never have to wait for cards to be dealt or for slowpoke tablemates to make a decision.
(You’ll never be pressured to make a decision, either, which is great for beginners.) How does that sound? Well, before I get into how to play 3-card poker, lets first look at our picks for the best casinos.
A couple things to keep in mind –
- You won’t find many, if any 3-card poker variations. However, what you may find are 3-card poker games under different names. That includes three card and tri-card poker.
- The biggest difference from one casino to the next will be the payouts. I suggest you read our reviews to find the casinos with the best odds/payouts.
- If the casino lets you take the deposit bonus, just know that you’re going to have a hard time getting through the wager requirements.
That’s about it. Other than that just make sure the casino you choose is reputable and has banking options you can use.
How to Play 3-Card Poker
At first glance, 3-card poker might seem strange or unfamiliar if you have never played the game.
But it’s a simple game to learn. We’re going to walk you through it now.
So the premise is this – you want to make a better poker hand than the dealer. Simple, right?
Each hand begins with you making an ante bet. Your ante bet (online) can be as low as $1, while most live casinos have a required minimum bet amount of $5 or $10.
After placing your ante bet, you and the dealer are both dealt 3 cards. Your cards are dealt face up, while the dealer’s hand is dealt face down.
At this point, you have two options: to raise your ante or fold.
If you fold, you’ll forfeit your ante. The hand is over for you.
To raise your ante, you must bet an amount equal to it. So if your ante bet is $5 you must raise another $5. This is something you want to keep in mind before you make your ante bet.
After you raise the dealer will flip his hand over.
If your hand beats the dealer’s hand, your ante and raise are paid out based on the pay table listed on the game. If the dealer’s hand beats yours, you’ll lose both your ante and raise.
But that’s only if the dealer qualifies.
The dealer must have a queen-high hand or better to qualify. If the dealer’s hand does not qualify, your ante is paid out at 1:1 and your raise (if you made it) is given back to you (a push or tie).
This means that even if you have a 9 high hand but decide to raise and play it anyway, the dealer has to have a queen or better in order for you to lose your ante or raise. If the dealer only has jack high then you’ll still win the ante and push the raise.
That’s all there is to it.
The Pairs Plus Bet
3-card poker has an additional bet called Pair Plus. This is an optional bet you make at the same time you make your ante bet.
This bet can be any size (within the table limits). And it pays only when you make a pair or better.
Nothing else matters. Not even the dealer’s hand.
But none of that matters because we recommend you pass on this side bet. It doesn’t have very good odds (7+ percent).
Top 3-Card Poker Hand Rankings
When playing 3-card poker, it is important to understand what beats what, as there are a few differences in how hands are ranked playing this game compared to a traditional poker game. We listed the ranks below.
- Straight Flush (such as A23 of one suit, or 456 of one suit)
- 3 of a kind (such as JJJ)
- Straight – (such as 789 of different suits)
- Flush – (same cards of 1 suit, such as A 7 T of diamonds)
- Pair – (such as 884)
- High Card – (such as A 9 4 different suits)
Keep in mind that suits are not used to break any ties.
Final Thoughts
To play 3-card poker you simply compare your three cards versus the dealers and see who has the best hand. It is a fast game, with only two betting rounds and relatively straightforward decisions on each hand. You can play a lot of hands in a short period of time, making it one of the most entertaining and popular casino table games on the market today.

Using codes at NJ online casinos
Codes — whether discount codes, bonus codes or promotional codes — they are a standard part of doing business on the internet. The legal casinos online in NJ are no different. Players signing up at NJ online casino sites will often be asked for some version of a code. But what are these codes? What are their purpose? Why should you use them?
NJ online casino promo codes
The most common type of code at New Jersey’s legal gambling sites is a promo code. Usually, the casino will ask for the promo code as part of the sign-up process. Sometimes it is referred to as a promotional code. The point is to allow you to access certain bonuses or promotions.
For example, the standard Free Play bonus at Virgin Casino is $10. But if you use our promo code, you can get $20 free play instead. The point of NJ online casino promo codes is to allow casinos to offer a variety of bonuses. Otherwise, they would have to offer one bonus to everyone. That would limit their ability to market to different customers.
Casinos want to be able to offer different bonuses to different players. NJ’s online casinos know that our visitors are more likely to sign up than a typical person. They also know that our visitors are savvy. Our visitors will shop for the best value. Some casinos in NJ give us a special promotional code. That way, they can offer a bigger bonus to our players.
NJ online casino bonus codes
Bonus codes are the same as promo codes. It comes down to what a casino decides to call it, but the core function is the same. NJ online casino bonus codes do exactly what promo codes do. They provide you with access to unique offers.

Do I have to use a code?
No. You can sign up without using any promo or bonus code, but you may miss out on better offers. And you may receive a smaller opening bonus.
There’s no cost for using a code, so it just makes sense to use one.
Where do I enter the code?
When you sign up. The sign-up form will contain a field marked “bonus code,” “promo code” or “promotional code.” This field is where you enter the code. IT is often found on the last screen.
If you have any questions about where to enter a code, send us an email.
Below is an example video that shows you how to use a code at Virgin Casino. It’s easy:
Are there different codes for different bonuses?
Yes. There’s the bonus or promo code that you use when you create your account. Casinos may send you additional bonus codes afterward. These codes will give you access to different promotions. Some will require a deposit; some will not. It depends on the offer.
Bonuses that don’t require a deposit
Let’s talk a bit about how you can try NJ online casinos without risking any of your own money. As mentioned above, we have exclusive promo codes that let you try before you buy. There’s no reason not to take advantage of these offers, but you should know how they work before you sign up.
Free play at NJ online casinos
A Free Play or No Deposit bonus is basically the same thing. The casino gives you some credit to try the site. To qualify for these offers, you usually have to be a new player. Sorry, this means you can’t already have an account at the site.
Nothing is stopping you from making accounts at all of NJ’s online casinos and taking advantage of all of the free play offers. You can only have one account at each site. But you can sign up for as many websites as you want.
The difference between free play and real money
Free play, aka bonus money, is not the same as real money. The big difference is that you can’t just cash it out. It can only be used to play games at the site. Otherwise, casinos would just be giving money away.
Is there a catch to the no-deposit bonuses at NJ online casinos?
There’s not a catch, but there are terms and conditions.
If New Jersey’s regulated online casinos were giving out money freely, they wouldn’t stay online for long. Just like any promotion, no-deposit bonuses at NJ’s regulated casino sites have some basic rules that you’ll need to follow — but that’s where NJOnlineCasinos.com comes in.
We take those terms and conditions and break them down in plain English, so you know what the deal is exactly— and so you can logically compare one offer to another.
Can I cash out the money from a free play bonus at a legal NJ online casino?
Nope.
Think of it this way: A no-deposit bonus is basically a way for NJ online gambling sites — like Tropicana Online Casino or Virgin Casino in NJ — to give you a free chip or two to get you playing. It’s just like free slot play at one of their land-based casinos, and not like the casino handing you cash.
The free online casino offers in NJ work the same way as free play at Harrah’s or Tropicana. It’s bonus money — but you can win real money using it, and that money can be cashed out once you’ve satisfied the terms and conditions. We stress that players should always read the fine print before taking advantage of a free slot play offer at any of New Jersey’s online casinos.
How do I cash out free play?
You can’t cash it out immediately. Sometimes you have to wager a certain amount before the free play converts into real money. In some cases, the free play can never be converted into real money. It’s good to read the fine print at each casino first, so you know what to expect.
In cases where you can convert a no-deposit bonus into real money at NJ gambling sites, you will have to “playthrough” a certain amount first. Playthrough requires you to wager a set amount of the money. We’ll talk about playthrough in a second.
Can I keep what I win?
Players often ask if they can keep their winning from free play bonuses. Usually, the answer is yes, but there may be some strings attached. It depends on the casino.
New Jersey law requires casinos to post the rules of their bonuses on their websites, so you can always check for the specifics there. Or ask us if you have a question about a given bonus. We’ll do our best to answer.
If there are strings attached, the most common one is that you have to playthrough some amount. After that, you can cash out. Let’s talk about how the playthrough works.
How does playthrough work?
Playthrough is a wagering requirement. Casinos use it to prevent abuse of bonuses.
An example will help to illustrate. Let’s say a casino:
Casino The Card Game Online
- Gives you $10 in free play.
- Requires a 1x wagering for you to receive the bonus.
The requirements mean you would need to bet $10 before the free play would convert to real money. If the conditions were 2x, you would need to bet $20.
Casinos will sometimes have different games count differently toward the requirement. Slots usually count at 100%. Lower-edge games, like roulette and blackjack, often count as less. Read the terms of each bonus for details.
Why do casinos offer these bonuses?
Free play bonuses are just another marketing tool for NJ online casinos. Think of it as an ad.
New Jersey gambling sites know that if you try the casino, you are more likely to become a customer, so they let you try for free. Land-based casinos do the same thing.
Do I need a bonus/promo code for free play bonuses at NJ sites?
Usually, but not always. To get the highest bonus, you should shop around. As far as we know, our codes offer the best bonuses available at New Jersey’s legal online casino websites.
Tell me more about your ranking system for no deposit bonuses at NJ casinos online
We rank the no deposit offers from NJ online casinos on a few basic criteria, including the quality of the casino, the quality of the no deposit offer, and the other bonuses and promotions available at the room.
Each one of our free-play reviews breaks down these individual components, and you can see how the various free bankroll offers stack up against one another by reviewing all of our offers here.
Bonuses that require a deposit
Now we’ve covered free play bonuses. What bonuses can you get if you deposit at a New Jersey online casino?
There are two common types. Match bonuses are the standard. Some casinos offer loss back promotions.
Deposit/match bonuses
Deposit bonuses (also called match bonuses) are what the seem. You deposit a certain amount and the casino matches it with some amount of bonus money.
Usually, deposit bonuses have a few parts:
- The match percentage
- A minimum deposit
- A maximum bonus
For example, many casinos in NJ offer a deposit bonus of 100%, up to $1,000. Golden Nugget is one. The minimum deposit varies for each site. But if you deposited $25, you would get a $25 bonus. If you deposited $1,000, you would get $1,000 in bonus money. But if you deposited more, you would still only get the $1,000 bonus.
Note that bonus money is not like real money. Read our “Free Play” section above to understand how bonus money works at a casino. Bonus money is not just cash that you can withdraw from your account; instead, it has some strings attached.
These strings don’t mean you shouldn’t get deposit bonuses. It just means you should read before you deposit, so then you won’t be disappointed. Deposit bonuses can still be a good value, but you should not confuse them with real money.
Cashback/loss-back bonuses
Cashback bonuses (also called loss-back bonuses) are not as common as deposit/match bonuses. The main casinos in New Jersey offering this kind of bonus are Virgin and Tropicana.
It works like this. You make a deposit (check the terms for the minimum amount), then the casino will rebate you some amount of your losses if you play and lose.
This kind of promotion is common at land-based casinos. It may be more common at Atlantic City casinos than at New Jersey’s online casino sites.
Do these promotions require a code?
It depends. But the code you use when you sign up is usually a different bonus or promotional code than the code you need to qualify for a match or loss back bonus.
Often you need no code at all. These bonuses are standard and are usually given to all players. Occasionally, an NJ internet casino might send you a specific code when letting you know about a promotion.
Other promotions at NJ online gambling sites
Once you’ve created an account and deposited, there are more promotions available at NJ’s online sites. Below is a sample of standard offers.
Leaderboards
One common offer at NJ sites is the “race” or “leaderboard” promotion. Here, players compete against each other to wager the most, play the most hands, and so on — usually these last a day or a week. They are sometimes monthly.
The leaders at the end of the period will receive prizes. These bonuses are nice, but by their nature, it can be difficult to get much value. Usually, you have to wager a lot to be competitive. That means you risk losing a lot.
New game promotions
When online casinos introduce a new game, they will sometimes offer incentives to players to get interested in a new game. These offers can be a valid way to try a new game with less risk.
Drawings and sweepstakes
Drawings and sweepstakes promotions are widespread at Atlantic City casinos. It’s no surprise that online casinos in AC have adopted them as well.
The key with online drawings and sweepstakes is basically the same as it is for land-based drawings and sweepstakes. You often have to do something to enter or be available at a particular time to have a chance at winning. For this reason, it’s good to read the terms carefully when you see these promotions.
Slot tournaments
Interestingly, slot tournaments have yet to catch on at NJ online casinos. While slot tournaments are incredibly common at land-based casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, you don’t see many at gambling sites in New Jersey. We believe this will eventually change. But for now, slot tournament lovers don’t have many options.
Recent developments regarding NJ online gambling bonuses
While the free money amounts offered by NJ online casinos have primarily stayed the same, we’ve noticed that some wagering requirements have become more player-friendly.
Why the movement toward generosity? It probably has something to do with the fact the industry is reaching maturity, and new players are dripping in at a slower pace than in the years past.
But whatever the reason, it’s about as good a time as any for new players to explore what NJ online casinos have to offer.
More about NJ online casino deals
New Jersey’s online casinos offer a number of different kinds of promotions to attract and retain players. Taking advantage of these promotions can often mean the difference between a losing session and a winning one. Remember, every bit of value you can extract from the casino eats into the house edge that the casino has over players.
Some different types of NJ online casino promotions include:
Nj Online Casino Three Card Game
- No deposit bonus: The one promotion no NJ online casino player should ignore. New Jersey’s online casinos offer free-play bonuses to new players who usually require no deposit. That’s a great way to try before you buy. These promotions are listed under the “standing offers” table.
- Match bonus: Another critical bonus for value-conscious NJ online gamblers. Here, the casino matches your deposit with bonus money. That bonus money must be earned via playthrough, but it’s still a great way to maximize your value. Casinos usually offer first-time deposit bonuses that are larger and more generous than reload bonuses, so you’ll want to consider maxing our your initial match bonus.
- Sweepstakes: A classic casino promotion. Here you’ll earn tickets usually based on your volume of play and those tickets are then entered into a drawing for prizes.
- Cash back: This is one of the rarest promotions at NJ online casinos. Here casinos give you some amount of your loss or cash back when you lose your own money playing their games.
- Multiplier: Here the NJ online casino offers you a multiplier on the reward points you earn. This is often tied to trying a new game or playing at certain times of day.
- Leaderboard: Here you’re usually competing against other players to wager the most/earn the most points in a predefined time frame, with the winners receiving a preset prize. These can be tough promotions to handicap because you never know how much other players will play.
How do we grade deals?
We are looking at a few key considerations when coming up with the grade for a given promotion. In order of importance, we consider:
- Value: How much pure value does the promotion offer to the player?
- Complexity: How difficult are the terms and conditions to comply with/understand?
- Feasibility: How likely is it that a typical player will be able to accomplish the maximum value from a promotion?
- Risk vs. reward: Beyond just pure value, how much will a player need to risk relative to the reward that the promotion offers?
Key takeaways about NJ online promotions and bonuses
Congratulations! You made it to the end of our extensive guide to NJ online casino bonus codes and promotions. With so many topics, a refresher is in order. Or maybe you just scrolled here and wanted the highlights. In any case, here’s what’s important:
- You should always use a bonus or promo code when signing up at an NJ online casino. Doing so can help you get a bigger bonus than you would otherwise.
- Free play is not the same as real money. It’s nice to have, but you should not confuse the two.
- You should always read the terms and conditions for any promotion or bonus. NJ law requires online casinos to post these on their websites.
- If you have any questions, ask!
